Primeval forests and ancient woods are under attack all around the world. The main threats are farming, mineral extraction, fires and logging.
As environmental activists we all have to understand the old grown forest ecosystems in order to fight with them and spread the knowledge about how important they are.
This Park protect one of the most important forests on Western Europe, the Sasso Fratino integral Reserve. Since 1959 humans are not allowed to go inside this forest and in the 90’s a National Park were create to protect the buffer area around it.
In 2017 someone set on fire a wood next to the inner part of the Park. The fire destroyed 37 hectares, and threat two houses and an historical site from medieval age.
After 3 days of struggle finally the rain cames and the fire was stopped.
Bialowieza is one of the last primeval plain forest in Europe and part of the UNESCO Heritage. For many years environmental activists fought against logging and finally obtain the stop. In 2018 I visited them to document the damage done to the forest.
